Russian Scientists Develop an AI Model to Predict Tumor Cell Mutations

A new system aims to link hundreds of mutations with drug effectiveness, helping physicians adjust treatments when tumors develop resistance

Understanding and Countering Tumor Resistance

Researchers at Sevastopol State University and the Robotics and Intelligent Control Systems Laboratory are developing an innovative method for predicting how cancer‑therapy drugs interact with tumor mutations and how tumors evolve resistance.

According to Professor Vadim Kramar, Doctor of Technical Sciences, cancer often returns after initial improvement, but with newly mutated cells. The most logical clinical response is to introduce synergistic auxiliary medications — yet applying this strategy is difficult because of limited data on specific mutations.

AI as a Partner to the Oncologist

The Sevastopol research team aims to identify effective combinations of drugs against both existing and emerging mutations. To understand how tumor cells evolve after treatment, they are designing a deep‑learning AI model that not only correlates hundreds of mutation patterns with drug properties in standard therapeutic protocols but also predicts possible future mutations.

“We are trying to develop a system that would allow physicians to receive treatment‑adjustment recommendations based on analysis — helping compensate for new mutations in tumor cells. This creates a broad space for collaboration between clinicians and AI. Doctors will be able to solve their tasks quickly using a large, structured data resource,” Kramar explained.
