Russian Students Invent a Smart Device for Pregnant Women

A new generation of Russian student innovators is building AI‑powered tools that predict fetal risks, digitize historical archives, and help cities monitor green spaces

At the nationwide hackathon 'Leaders of Digital Transformation,' student teams from the National University of Science and Technology MISIS captured five prize‑winning positions. Participants from 89 regions of Russia and 26 countries tackled 20 advanced technology challenges in artificial intelligence, big data, and machine learning.

Two MISIS teams shared first place. Svetlana Shubina, Grigory Isupov, Andrey Kadomtsev, and Stepan Piskunov developed a predictive‑analytics service for fetal monitors used in maternity hospitals. The system forecasts hypoxia and other abnormalities in utero, helping reduce medical risks for newborns.

Another first‑place team, MISIS_MSc — consisting of Ekaterina Prozhipko, Polina Kibitkina, Olga Zakharzhevskaya, Maria Kovaleva, and Artyom Sosedka — created an offline platform for retro‑conversion of archival documents for Moscow’s Main Archive. The service includes OCR capabilities with support for pre‑revolutionary spelling, recognizing and indexing handwritten metric books.

The team BEZUMCY (Vadim Korotaev, Vadim Romanov, and Vladimir Kacheev) built an intelligent data‑engineer assistant for the Moscow Department of Information Technologies. The tool automatically connects to data sources, builds ETL pipelines, and designs data warehouses.

Students Maxim Simakov, Anna Pishchulina, Kirill Veriyalov, Svyatoslav Savinov, and Daniil Ananyev from MISIS x OptonGroup were recognized for a multiplatform application that assesses the condition of urban green spaces using photographs. They integrated computer‑vision models and geoanalytics into the service.

The team FEMME — Ekaterina Isaeva, Elena Timofeeva, and Alexandra Galtsova — received third place for a web service that analyzes images of city plantings for the Moscow Department of Environmental Protection.
