A Russian Student Built a Bird Drone That Actually Flaps Its Wings

A Russian student has designed a drone that flaps its wings like a real bird. The lightweight ornithopter could find uses in airports and wildlife reserves.

A student from the Moscow Aviation Institute has built an unmanned aerial vehicle that mimics the flight of a bird by flapping its wings. Every part of the ornithopter was 3D-printed.

This new device stands out from existing analogs. While similar drones typically weigh between 15 and 30 kilograms, the student managed to reduce its weight to just about 1 kilogram, with a wingspan of 1.5 meters.

The ornithopter combines the advantages of drones and airplanes. It can take off vertically, move quickly in horizontal flight, and does not require specially equipped launch sites. The design makes it ideal for tasks where speed, maneuverability, and minimal disruption to the environment are crucial.

One possible use is in airports, where the ornithopter could scare away birds from runways. With its active wing movements and predator-like imitation, it can serve as a deterrent. The device is also suitable for nature reserves, where it can help monitor wildlife. Its smooth flight and minimal noise make it nearly invisible to animals in their natural habitat.

The project is now in its final development stage. Flight tests are scheduled for 2026.
