AI and Drones Help Cut Wildfire Damage Threefold in Russian Region

In Kirov Oblast, more than 80% of forest fires were extinguished within the first 24 hours, thanks to an AI-powered video monitoring system and drone patrols.

The Kirov region of Russia has wrapped up its wildfire season with striking results: the total number of forest fires dropped threefold after the introduction of new digital monitoring tools.

According to the regional Ministry of Forestry, 31 fires were detected this season, and 80% were extinguished within a day. Officials credit the success to a video surveillance system powered by artificial intelligence and the use of quadcopters for rapid detection and response. Overall, the total burned area fell by 3.7 times compared to the average across the Volga Federal District.

AI Patrols the Skies

Earlier reports from IT Russia highlighted the development of an onboard neural network for drones designed to detect fires from the air. The system identifies ignition points, determines their exact geographic coordinates, and transmits both location data and live video feeds to ground stations in real time.

The combination of AI analytics and drone-based reconnaissance has proven to be one of the most effective tools for early wildfire response — helping Russia’s forestry services dramatically reduce both damage and risk this season.
