AI Makes Russian Cities Greener and More Livable

Urban developers are testing “green AI” to manage water, lighting, and public spaces—technology designed to improve quality of life while conserving natural resources.

Russia is rapidly advancing in the field of “green artificial intelligence,” a technology that integrates smart systems into parks, squares, and residential areas. Experts say the trend has global relevance, showing how cutting-edge tools can drive sustainable development and enhance city life while protecting the environment.

Anna Slyatina, deputy director for construction at INSITI, explained that intelligent systems of the future will analyze terrain, sun movement, wind direction, utility networks, and even pedestrian flows. With these factors combined, urban planners will be able to design public spaces that are both functional and comfortable, reported Moskovsky Komsomolets.

Water management is a key focus. Elena Larina, head of landscaping and greening at INSITI Development, noted that AI-managed artificial ponds act as microclimate generators: cooling and humidifying the air in summer and serving as popular recreation spots. Smart drainage and irrigation systems, which adjust based on soil moisture and weather forecasts, reduce water consumption. Adaptive lighting lowers electricity use without compromising safety.

Future plans include installing smart benches for gadget charging and navigation, as well as creating interactive art objects that respond to people’s presence and transform the use of public space.
