AI-Powered Cameras Boost Road Safety in Russia’s Urals

Sverdlovsk region is expanding its network of smart traffic cameras, using artificial intelligence to curb dangerous driving habits such as phone use behind the wheel and failure to wear seat belts.

Authorities in the Sverdlovsk region are rolling out more AI-enabled traffic cameras, according to acting deputy head of the regional traffic enforcement center Sergey Kobyakov. The technology is designed to automatically detect high-risk violations. The new systems will specifically target drivers using mobile phones while driving and those not wearing seat belts.

The AI algorithms are reported to operate with 99.5 percent accuracy, and any erroneous tickets are automatically canceled.

By the end of 2025, the number of AI-powered cameras in the region is expected to grow by 30 to 40 units. A year ago, only 30 were in place; today, 75 systems are active. In total, there are 471 stationary and mobile traffic monitoring complexes currently operating on local roads.

The introduction of AI has already demonstrated strong results, with violations on high-risk road segments falling by 90 percent within a year.
