AI-Powered Monitoring System Boosts Russia’s Livestock Sector

A new smart farming solution uses cameras and algorithms to track pigs’ health and weight with remarkable accuracy.

Russian engineers are applying artificial intelligence to revolutionize livestock farming. A domestic tech firm has launched the 'Digital Pig Farm' project, which features a robot that monitors key metrics such as weight, diet, activity, and overall health of pigs.

According to Lazarevskoe Tech, all it takes is a single camera positioned above the feeding zone. The AI system captures posture data and other parameters, then calculates the pig’s weight. While a seasoned livestock expert can estimate a pig’s weight within a 5 kg margin of error, the AI reduces that to just 1–3%. Developers also note that a pig’s weight can fluctuate by up to 5% over a day depending on food and water intake.

Beyond measuring weight, the system can identify sick animals based on behavioral time tracking. By reviewing long-term behavioral data, farmers can pinpoint health issues and their possible causes.

This innovation underscores the potential of AI to transform agriculture and improve livestock management in Russia.
