AI Surveillance System Rolls Out on Russia’s Railways

Neural networks are being used to detect safety violations, fires, and break-ins in real time on one of the country’s busiest rail lines.

Russia is deploying an AI-powered monitoring system across the Oktyabrskaya Railway, the country’s largest rail network spanning the entire northwest. According to the industry outlet Gudok, the system has already been in pilot operation for a year and is now being integrated into full-scale use.

Equipped with high-definition cameras, the system continuously records video streams while a neural network analyzes the footage to detect abnormal events. It can identify safety violations, unauthorized entry, and signs of fire, automatically alerting operators the moment something goes wrong.

Toward a Fully Automated Rail Network

Developer Alexander Alexandrov said future plans include linking the AI system with other railway software — for example, tools that track employee health checks and training compliance. Once integrated, access control for staff could become entirely automated, allowing only authorized and fit workers to enter restricted areas.

The system’s success on the Oktyabrskaya line could pave the way for nationwide implementation across Russian Railways, bringing one of the world’s largest rail networks closer to fully intelligent infrastructure.
