AI to Speed Up Security Screening at Russian Airport

The new system counts passengers, monitors queues, and detects unattended items to make screening faster and safer.

Artificial intelligence is being integrated into the passenger terminal control system at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport, according to the press service of AeroVokzal Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the airport’s operating company. The technology, developed domestically, is part of a broader effort to digitally transform airport operations across Russia.

The new video analytics module uses AI to count visitors, measure queue lengths, and assess activity in real time. It can automatically identify unattended baggage and flag suspicious behavior based on programmed parameters—helping security staff respond faster and more accurately to potential threats.

The First Step in a Larger Digital Overhaul

“Our current priority is monitoring passengers and their belongings, but this is only the beginning of how we plan to use artificial intelligence,” said Valentin Lebedev, head of the airport’s transportation security service.

The next stage of implementation, scheduled for 2026, will introduce a biometric identification system for faster and more secure passenger processing.

Together, these upgrades signal a major step toward AI-driven airport management, where automation not only enhances safety but also reduces wait times and improves the overall travel experience for passengers.
