Artificial Intelligence in Russia Is Mastering the Profession of Agronomist

Developments from the Stavropol Agrarian University are already in use and help increase crop yields.

At the AgroRus-2025 exhibition, several developments from the Stavropol Agrarian University received the Grand Prix and gold medals. The spotlight was on projects where agricultural science directly relies on IT—from satellite image analysis to automated fertilization dosing and weed detection systems.

Satellite Assist

Experts were most interested in a technology that combines satellite Earth remote sensing data with express plant analysis to precisely calculate fertilizer doses. Using the NDVI vegetation index, scientists identify problem zones and conduct rapid laboratory tests. The method has already been implemented in a number of farms in the region, increasing the yield of certain crops by up to 40%. The work is based on digital field maps and automatic recommendations.

Smart Fertilizer Distributor

Another invention recognized by the jury is a controlled fertilizer flow distributor. Essentially, it is a compact digital module installed on existing seeders and spreaders. It automatically adjusts the spraying rate based on GPS maps created from agrochemical analyses. The unit uses domestic electronics and is currently being tested in real field conditions.

Drones Against Weeds

The project for weed control using drones and neural networks also attracted interest. Drones capture images of fields, and a trained neural model identifies weeds, diseases, and pest hotspots. The system generates a forecast, marks problem areas on a map, and suggests targeted treatment options. This gives farmers an opportunity to reduce chemical usage and improve environmental sustainability.

All projects share one feature — the use of new technologies to increase the precision of farming. The university is developing its own laboratories, including a digital crop production center, and actively involves students in scientific research.
