Atommash and Petrozavodskmash Reach Gold-Level Digital Maturity

Both plants in Rosatom’s Machine-Building Division have been awarded gold status as digital enterprises under the Rosatom Production System (PSR). Their operations already incorporate digital services, robotics, and artificial intelligence tools.

The Atommash plant in Volgodonsk and Petrozavodskmash in Karelia rank among the top performers in Rosatom’s internal ranking of digital PSR enterprises. Both facilities retained gold status, while for Atommash this is the first time it has reached gold status. The plant showcased 21 applications involving digitalization, robotics, and artificial intelligence now used across production, planning, and quality control.

These plants manufacture key equipment for nuclear power plants based on Russian designs. That means their level of digital maturity directly affects project timelines and construction quality across large-scale nuclear builds. The awards were presented at a meeting of the Rosatom Production System management council, chaired by Director General Alexey Likhachev.

Robotics Already on the Shop Floor

Digital maturity at these sites is not limited to management systems and analytics. It also includes practical deployment of robotics on the shop floor. In the fall of 2025, Atommash commissioned a robotic system for ultrasonic inspection of weld seams in reactor vessels and steam generators. The system performs inspections three times faster on welds up to 30 centimeters thick and detects defects that cannot be identified through visual inspection.

This is critical for nuclear engineering, where quality control is a primary requirement. The robotic system takes over labor-intensive and highly precise tasks, while engineers gain a more reliable tool for verifying complex welded joints, including those with challenging geometries. This improves quality consistency and reduces workload on personnel.

Digital Systems as Part of Production Culture

At the digital PSR level, plants operate under continuous digital modernization. At Atommash, a digital suggestion management service has shown that bottom-up initiatives can also reshape production culture. Employees can submit improvement ideas more quickly, while management can move those proposals into implementation without delay.

At Petrozavodskmash, the digital framework now covers nearly the entire production cycle. The plant uses systems with AI elements to support planning and production management, as well as product quality control.

Why It Matters

Rosatom’s Machine-Building Division covers the full lifecycle of critical equipment for nuclear power plants, from R&D and engineering documentation to manufacturing processes and final output. Its products support around 20% of nuclear power plants operating in dozens of countries.

Digitalization at Rosatom is driven by practical production needs rather than reporting requirements. Artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital services are becoming part of everyday operations. For the nuclear sector, this is no longer only about modernization but also about maintaining global competitiveness.

A Benchmark for the Industry

In Karelia, Petrozavodskmash has opened the region’s first laboratory for robotics, advanced equipment, and new technologies. This is expected to strengthen the local engineering base and provide a platform for further innovation. At Atommash, the next step will involve expanding robotic inspection systems and continuing digital transformation of production processes. Together, the two plants have established themselves not only as strong manufacturing sites but also as benchmarks for the broader machine-building industry.

Gold status is both a recognition of what has been achieved and a reference point for the future. We have seen that digital solutions deliver measurable results in day-to-day operations. Our next task is to turn individual successes into a stable system where technology supports the reliability and precision of every production cycle
