Beget Brings Public /64 IPv6 Subnets to Cloud Servers

The technology gives businesses greater flexibility in configuring their IT infrastructure.

Import substitution in Russia, including in the telecom industry, has entered a new phase compared with previous years. Simply developing and bringing a domestic product to market is no longer enough. It must be a technologically mature product that can match global alternatives and keep pace with current technology trends.

Addressing a Fundamental Challenge

Beget recently made a public /64 IPv6 subnet available for cloud servers across all its locations. Put simply, the company is moving toward a more modern networking model that makes it easier for enterprise customers to build flexible IT infrastructure.

The deployment addresses one of the main constraints faced by users of IPv4-based systems. The number of addresses available for devices and services is limited, making frequent use of NAT, or Network Address Translation, necessary. NAT translates network addresses, allowing devices on a local network to access the internet through a single shared public IP address. But these additional layers make network configurations more complex.

IPv6 stands out for its vastly larger address space. These subnets are well suited to hosting websites and APIs, running Docker and Kubernetes, building microservices architectures, creating test and isolated environments, and supporting projects with large numbers of connected devices, including IoT deployments.

A Phased Upgrade

Beget's engineers recognize that the transition to the newer protocol is far from complete and that companies continue to rely on IPv4 in most cases. The new offering therefore allows both types of subnets to be used in parallel. That gives customers a way to modernize their infrastructure gradually and flexibly without causing major disruption.

“IPv6 makes it possible to assign public addresses to individual services and other resources, while the ability to use the protocol alongside IPv4 allows companies to introduce it gradually into their existing infrastructure without having to rebuild everything,” said Vladislav Kolesnikov, head of Beget's Cloud product.

Easy Setup

A public /64 IPv6 subnet can be connected to any virtual server through the Beget control panel. Users have access to instructions for configuring global IPv6 addresses for containers and hosting websites and APIs with both IPv6 and IPv4 support. The company plans to expand the technology to other products in the future, including cloud databases and Kubernetes.

Engineers say the transition to IPv6 is inevitable. Rapid digitalization, the expansion of digital services and the growth of the Internet of Things are driving a sharp increase in the number of devices connected to networks at the same time. Older technologies can no longer meet all the demands being placed on them.

The Transition Is Already Underway

Russia has been gradually deploying IPv6 for several years. In 2022, domestic providers began offering IPv6 more actively as an additional option for customers developing virtual private server infrastructure.

In 2023, Russian hosting provider LandVPS announced the launch of free IPv6 subnets for its Russian locations. Customers gained access to infrastructure they could use for their own services and additional addresses.

By 2024, IPv6 availability had begun to emerge as a key competitive advantage for providers. The change reflected a shift in demand itself. Developers increasingly needed not only computing capacity but also modern networking capabilities for building microservices and cloud applications.

IPv6 deployment continues to expand in Russia. The standard is expected to soon become the primary protocol for companies operating complex, distributed IT infrastructure. It is likely to become as fundamental a component of cloud platforms as virtualization, automation and software-defined networking.

IPv6 is particularly relevant for infrastructure with large numbers of services, containers and network resources. We introduced a public /64 subnet for Beget cloud servers so that users can expand their infrastructure flexibly without running into the address-space limitations of IPv4
