Cosmonauts on ISS Use AI to Transcribe Communications for the First Time

Crew members aboard the International Space Station (ISS) have begun using artificial intelligence in real operations on orbit. The GigaChat (large language model) developed by Sber and delivered on the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft can automatically convert spoken communication into text, even in noisy environments and when complex abbreviations are used.

“This is the first time targeted work with AI is being conducted on the ISS. At the initial stage, we are using an onboard large language model operating independently from ground servers, training it to recognize human speech and process recordings,” said Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, TASS special correspondent on the ISS and station commander. “As a result, we obtain text in the required format — such as notes or short summaries.”

The system is currently used to log communication sessions, prepare reports, and generate messages for Earth, reducing routine workload for crew members. The neural network was specifically designed for orbital conditions: it handles high noise levels, understands bilingual speech combining Russian and English, and processes specialized terminology.
