Digital Coworker and Semantic Search: How the VK WorkSpace Platform Has Changed

VK Tech, a leading Russian developer of enterprise software, has updated its VK WorkSpace communications platform. The platform now includes smart features within individual services, as well as an AI assistant.

The new capabilities will allow employees to automate their work and handle everyday tasks more quickly and effectively.

AI Assistant to the Rescue

The latest update to the VK WorkSpace enterprise platform brings artificial intelligence into workplace processes. The new version improves the platform's search function: VK WorkSpace can now find information based on meaning. Users no longer need to remember the exact name of a document or email – they only need to describe the task or topic, and the system will find the relevant documents. Importantly, it will automatically take the user's access rights into account, making data available only to the extent permitted by the employee's permissions.

AI-powered features will also make it possible to transcribe video conferences and generate meeting summaries that capture the main topics, decisions and follow-up tasks. Another advantage of the new platform version is a digital coworker for employees. The AI assistant works with a user's conversations in the VK WorkSpace messenger. It identifies the meaning of a request, finds the relevant information and can provide a ready-made answer with links to the messages and chats where the issue was discussed. The feature is currently available in VK WorkSpace On-Premise, while the cloud version is set to get it in October.

Over time, the virtual assistant's capabilities will expand. It will be able to analyze information from different services – VK WorkSpace email, Drive and Calendar. Users will be able to control the feature through questions, such as, “What did we discuss about the project last week?” The AI assistant will review chats, emails and documents and return a ready-made summary with links to the information sources.

AI Agents to Take Over Data Collection and Analysis

The addition of an MCP server to VK WorkSpace will allow AI agents to access the platform's service functions. They will operate within VK WorkSpace when, for example, employees need to gather information from workplace conversations or prepare materials for a meeting. In the future, AI agents will be able to use functions across different services to handle specific tasks – not only analyzing information in chats but also retrieving it from emails and documents. The MCP server is already available in VK WorkSpace On-Premise, while its launch in the SaaS version is scheduled for October. Initially, AI agents will work with the messenger; by the end of the year, they are expected to use VK WorkSpace email, Drive and Calendar.

One Step Closer to Technological Independence

The VK WorkSpace update has simplified and accelerated routine workplace processes through artificial intelligence. The new capabilities and features will allow employees at different companies to find information in corporate data more quickly, while some operations, such as preparing documents or processing messages, can be automated. They are also expected to make remote and hybrid work significantly more convenient.

The platform update highlights some of the most visible trends in Russia's IT market: developers are now building full-fledged business ecosystems rather than individual services, generative AI is being integrated into business processes, and digital product developers are actively creating Russian alternatives to foreign enterprise platforms. These developments are being driven in part by tighter requirements for controlling corporate data, as well as the need to run artificial intelligence within a protected environment.

The VK WorkSpace update addresses the needs of Russian businesses: companies will be able to deploy AI tools without building their own infrastructure, control how corporate data is used, and gain greater independence from foreign enterprise platforms.

At the national level, the development of products like these is important to achieving technological independence and building a Russian enterprise software market. Today, VK Tech's product is aimed at Russia's enterprise software market and is particularly relevant to companies and organizations that require local infrastructure. In the future, VK WorkSpace could successfully enter the global market, but the product may require substantial adaptation, including support for foreign languages, a partner network and compliance with the security standards of different countries.

Our task is to embed AI tools into the digital environment so they can use workplace context from conversations, meetings, emails, documents and corporate systems, making work simpler and more efficient. Users will be able to interact with the AI assistant and agents as they would with colleagues – using natural language. At the same time, people remain at the center: they set the goal and control the outcome
