Digital Technologies Are Transforming School Meals in Russia
In St. Petersburg, AI monitors kitchen hygiene, while parents manage payments through a mobile app.

Russia is rapidly modernizing its school meal system through digital innovation. According to the St. Petersburg city government, school cafeterias are now being equipped with AI-powered monitoring systems that ensure strict hygiene standards. Parents can track their child’s diet and pay for meals online via the “Petersburg Education” portal or through a student smart card — even setting spending limits on sweets.
Students themselves are also shaping the transformation. Through the “School Cafeteria Through the Eyes of a Student” competition, they submit creative design ideas for dining spaces, and the best projects are brought to life by the city administration.
Smart Kitchens and Smart Management
As Irina Volynets, member of Russia’s Civic Chamber, noted in an interview with IT Russia, successful modernization of school nutrition depends on cooperation between parents, school administrations, and modern technologies — including artificial intelligence.
