Digital Water Utilities Roll Out Across Russian Regions

Astrakhan has become the latest region to deploy remote monitoring systems to track the condition of water networks.

Innovative technologies have been introduced into Astrakhan’s water supply system, according to telecommunications company MTS. The digital solutions provider helped make the monitoring of pipelines and related infrastructure smarter and more responsive.

Special sensors are being installed in main pipelines, transmitting real-time operational data to a digital platform. The system records key metrics, flags potential risks and abnormal situations, and also helps regulate water supply levels.

A Dedicated Communications System

Data is transmitted via NB-IoT, an industrial Internet of Things technology that ensures reliable connectivity even in hard-to-reach locations. The Digital Water Utility service analyzes the performance of the entire water supply infrastructure.

“The pilot project in Astrakhan shows how digital solutions based on NB-IoT and cloud platforms not only detect incidents but also enable a shift toward predictive management of strategic infrastructure. This is the first step toward creating solutions that can be scaled to other regions, improving the efficiency of public utilities nationwide,” said Pavel Podkolzin, head of MTS’s Integrated Project Management Department.

Similar solutions are being developed by other Russian companies as well.
