Drones With Smart Cameras Detect Power Line Faults at Early Stages

The technology can identify defects long before they become visible to the human eye.

Russian engineers have developed a way to detect damage on power transmission lines that may be invisible during manual inspections. The approach relies on drones equipped with smart ultraviolet cameras.

When defects appear on a line, they generate microscopic electrical discharges that emit ultraviolet radiation. The camera captures these points and identifies areas where a failure may occur. The system analyzes pulsation patterns: chaotic signals indicate background noise, while rhythmic pulses at 50 Hz serve as a clear marker of a developing fault.

“The system is equipped with optical filters for daylight operation and a high-speed UV camera capable of frequency analysis of pulsations. The device can not only detect a problem at an early stage but also assess how critical it is,” the developers said.

Regular aerial inspections using this technology may begin in the near future, enabling operators to identify defects at the earliest stages.
