Such classes could help students develop discipline and teamwork skills, according to Dmitry Smit, president of the Russian Esports Federation.

According to Smit, the federation has been working with the school community since 2018, when it launched the School League. Russia’s Ministry of Education has already recommended introducing esports classes in schools as part of physical education, alongside other sports popular with students.

Several esports disciplines are expected to be used in education, including multiplayer online battle arenas, competitive puzzle games, sports simulators, real-time strategy, tactical three-dimensional combat, technical simulators and fighting games.

“We expect esports classes to be introduced in all schools. Students will not simply play games, but train and develop skills, discipline, teamwork and the ability to make decisions with incomplete information and under time pressure,” Smit said.

According to Smit, esports will continue to grow both in participation and in the level of competition.
