Gorky Railway and MTS to Bring Flood Monitoring in Nizhny Novgorod Region Under Digital Control
Gorky Railway and MTS signed a strategic partnership agreement on digitalization of the transportation sector at the TsIPR-2026 forum, with flood monitoring and wastewater-control systems in the Nizhny Novgorod Region set to move onto digital infrastructure.

The first joint project focuses on flood monitoring. Solar-powered sensors will be installed along railway tracks at fixed intervals. The devices react to water-level changes within one minute and transmit data through GSM channels to operational headquarters and then to the Infrastructure Management Center. If water levels rise to critical levels, on-duty specialists will be able to respond immediately. The sensors track fluctuations in rivers, canals, lakes, bays, and reservoirs and can be installed on bridges, shoreline supports, and other infrastructure facilities. The system is expected to be especially valuable during the spring flood season.
The second area of cooperation involves environmental monitoring of polluted wastewater discharges and control over their chemical composition. The initiative is part of Russian Railways’ Environmental Strategy through 2030. In practice, the partnership positions digital technologies as tools for addressing both transportation safety and environmental protection at the same time.
