How Advanced Technologies Are Transforming Russia’s Heat Energy Sector

Digital and additive manufacturing technologies are reshaping how Russia manages heating systems and critical infrastructure—with low investment and high efficiency.

Russian energy companies are rapidly adopting digital solutions to modernize the country’s fuel and energy sector. Experts highlight that many of these technologies are also being integrated into public utilities, helping drive efficiency and automation.

According to Lilia Akhmetshina, Associate Professor at the Financial University under the Government of Russia, these innovations require relatively small investments while solving a wide range of challenges—from workforce training to remote facility management.

One of the fastest-growing areas involves the use of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) technologies. Engineers can “enter” digital twins of real facilities, such as boiler houses and heat networks, using specialized headsets. This allows them to conduct virtual inspections, detect problems, and simulate emergency scenarios without disrupting live operations. For instance, Pavel Maryshev, a member of the Expert Council of the Russian Gas Society, noted that engineers using VR headsets can assess the condition of heat networks in real time and immediately initiate repair operations, according to Kommersant.

Additive manufacturing—or 3D printing—also plays a vital role. It allows for quick and cost-effective production or restoration of parts used in heating systems. Oleg Shevtsov, CEO of Transenerkom JSC, reports that more than 200 components for boiler systems were 3D-printed in St. Petersburg last year alone. This approach speeds up repairs and reduces dependency on foreign suppliers.

Experts emphasize that these technologies are essential for Russia’s broader import substitution policy and help enhance the reliability of critical infrastructure. Globally, they offer valuable insights into how digital transformation can make aging energy systems smarter, safer, and more efficient for consumers.
