Hyperspectral Camera Could Reveal Hidden Details in Fields and Paintings

Researchers at Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University have developed and patented a hyperspectral imaging system that analyzes images with laboratory-grade precision.

The device captures image data across multiple wavelengths, enabling it to detect signs of plant pathogens in drone-based surveys of agricultural fields and identify fungal contamination in grain. It can also help determine the composition of pigments in paintings and support the diagnosis of skin conditions. The developers plan to shrink the system to the size of a conventional video camera for mass production.

Currently, similar analyses rely on Fabry–Pérot interferometers, which are rarely manufactured in Russia, and the equipment is very expensive.

“Our development will make this type of analysis more affordable for a wider range of farmers and other customers,” said Dmitry Serebryakov, a postgraduate researcher at the university.

Farmers are interested in these technologies, but individual farms can cover thousands of hectares, making the cost of monitoring a decisive factor.
