In Russia, AI Traffic Cameras Issue Tens of Thousands of Fines

In Surgut, smart AI-powered systems are catching violations with 95 percent accuracy, reducing risks on the road.

Russia is pressing ahead with large-scale adoption of advanced technologies in transportation. In Surgut, 40 modern cameras equipped with artificial intelligence recorded 36,000 traffic violations in just one month. That included 29,000 cases of drivers not wearing seat belts and 7,000 incidents of using phones while driving, according to the daily Moskovsky Komsomolets.

The domestically produced systems operate with more than 95 percent accuracy, automatically registering violations and transmitting the data to inspectors for review. This enables quicker fines and helps boost road discipline.

AI-enabled cameras also reduce the workload for traffic police, encouraging drivers to build lasting habits of compliance. Surgut has become one of the first cities in Russia to actively deploy artificial intelligence for traffic enforcement. Analysts say such systems could reduce the number of accidents by 20 to 30 percent, making roads safer for everyone.
