In Russia, Robotic Transporters Save Time and Reduce Workload

A new automated logistics system at the GAZ automobile plant uses autonomous electric transport robots to cut labor costs by 20 percent

Russia’s Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ) has introduced an automated logistics system in which autonomous electric transporters move components across production halls without human assistance. The upgrade has reduced labor requirements by approximately 20 percent.

Starting Small

The project began in 2023 with just three robotic tow tractors that transported truck cabins from the paint shop to the assembly line. Since then, the network of routes has expanded dramatically. Today, smart transporters operate across more than fifty internal routes, delivering hundreds of different components, and robotic logistics has become a routine part of daily production operations.

Guided by Sensors

The tow robots can pull loads of up to 1,100 kg, navigating via magnetic strips equipped with RFID markers. Laser and radio sensors prevent collisions, while a wireless route‑coordination system eliminates bottlenecks and idle time.

According to plant specialists, automating in‑shop logistics has reduced heavy manual labor and eliminated the need for workers to move parts by hand. This has sped up component delivery, simplified assembly, and reduced physical strain on personnel. The system fits seamlessly into the plant’s long‑standing lean‑production strategy.

New Robots on the Way

GAZ is now developing upgraded transporters, including robots capable of carrying loads up to three tons and navigating without magnetic strips. Their introduction will give the plant greater flexibility when modifying inter‑shop routes and allow automation to expand into areas previously requiring manual labor.

The growth of autonomous logistics is yet another example of how Russian manufacturers are adapting advanced technologies to their needs — steadily reducing labor intensity and increasing production efficiency.

Reducing labor costs and increasing productivity remain key drivers of growth for any industrial enterprise.
