In Russia, 'Smart' Fire Alarms Call Rescuers Automatically

These GSM-enabled devices may set a new global safety standard, as they can automatically alert emergency services and relatives when a fire breaks out.

In the Republic of Bashkortostan, engineers have successfully tested and begun large-scale installation of unique smart fire detectors equipped with GSM modules. These devices automatically notify emergency services, relatives, and neighbors in case of a fire—a feature that has already saved multiple lives.

Unlike traditional alarms that simply emit sound, the smart detector sends distress signals simultaneously to six phone numbers: an automated call to emergency services and SMS messages to relatives who can quickly respond.

“The detector makes it possible to notify emergency responders, neighbors, and relatives immediately. Three people were rescued during the pilot project,” said Kirill Pervov, head of Bashkortostan’s State Committee for Emergency Situations.

Continuous Remote Monitoring

A major advantage of the technology is continuous remote monitoring. The device sends periodic self-diagnostic messages confirming its operational status—solving the issue of traditional detectors that require manual battery checks.

The pilot project, launched in several districts of Bashkortostan, has already expanded to 15 municipalities. Installation priority is given to people with hearing, vision, or mobility impairments, for whom rapid notification is especially critical.

The rollout of such systems in Russia demonstrates a practical approach to protecting vulnerable populations using accessible technologies. If successful, this model could help establish automated remote fire-alert systems as a global standard for preventing fire-related fatalities, particularly in rural and remote areas.
