Russian cybersecurity developer Kaspersky Lab helped protect one of the world’s largest sporting events. The company’s specialists worked with Interpol to reduce cyber threats linked to the Africa Cup of Nations football tournament, which took place in Morocco in January 2026. According to Kaspersky’s press service, events of this scale attract massive audiences and often become targets for fraud and cybercrime.

The Russian experts identified a leak of more than 2 million sets of login credentials belonging to Moroccan users and websites. The stolen data had been obtained by attackers using malicious software.

Global-Scale Security Projects

In the three months leading up to the tournament, specialists prevented more than 300 hacking attempts. Kaspersky Lab also identified phishing websites designed to collect user data and payment details by offering “tickets” to the tournament or “prizes” for correctly predicting the winning team.

According to Yulia Shlychkova, vice president for public affairs at Kaspersky Lab, cooperation between public and private organizations is essential during large international events in order to protect millions of participants.

This is not the company’s first large international cybersecurity project. Kaspersky Lab previously worked with Interpol on security efforts during the Olympic Games in Paris and the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Singapore.
