Moscow’s Department of Information Technology and Protei Research and Development Center signed a cooperation agreement to build Russia’s first domestic 5G core-network segment. The system will be deployed at the capital’s 5G demonstration center in Moshab Skolkovo. Earlier, the site also installed the country’s first 5G mobile base station developed by IRTEYA.

Protei Research and Development Center is currently Russia’s only developer and supplier of 5G mobile-network core infrastructure. The core network is responsible for call processing, connection management, and data transmission. Launching the new facility is expected to lay the groundwork for future projects, including pilot zones for testing 5G applications in internet-of-things systems, smart-city infrastructure, and smart-manufacturing environments built entirely on Russian technology.

Officials from the Department of Information Technology said Moscow is creating a benchmark environment for the development of domestic telecommunications technologies. Transitioning to fully Russian-built infrastructure remains a strategic objective.
