Moscow’s Young Coders Build AI Tools for Health and Cybersecurity
Russian students are turning their passion for artificial intelligence into real-world innovations—from medical diagnostics to cybersecurity.
Moscow is rapidly expanding its IT education ecosystem for school students. Today, 169 specialized classes are open across the city for aspiring programmers, according to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. Students learn the mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence, data science, and machine learning—and most importantly, they put these skills into practice.
AI for Health and Well-Being
High school student Anastasia Boryakina has designed a neural network capable of predicting pollen levels in the air—an innovation that could power an online service to help allergy sufferers plan their days. Another student, Roman Karnakov, built an AI module to analyze MRI scans for brain disorders. His software automatically identifies tumors and evaluates their characteristics. Meanwhile, Maria Pashkova, Victoria Chernaya, and Elizaveta Mor developed an AI-driven speech recognition system to streamline medical record-keeping.
AI Versus AI: Defending Digital Trust
Sergey Bazarov has gone a step further by creating what he calls an ‘anti-AI’ tool—an algorithm designed to detect images generated by neural networks. This technology could become a powerful asset in the fight against cyber fraud and misinformation.
From School Labs to Real Impact
These projects were showcased at the ‘Engineers of the Future’ scientific and practical conference. In the section dedicated to big data and machine learning alone, students presented over 250 projects—double the number from last year. Mayor Sobyanin emphasized that ‘training in pre-professional IT classes helps students with early career guidance.’
Across Moscow, more than 20,000 extracurricular technology clubs engage over 360,000 children—cultivating the next generation of engineers, researchers, and innovators.
