Robot Surgeons Are Performing Operations in Moscow Cancer Centers

Robotic surgery with 3D visualization makes it possible to operate in hard-to-reach areas, reduces blood loss, and speeds up patient recovery.

Robotic-assisted surgeries have been performed in Moscow cancer centers for several years. As previously stated by Deputy Mayor Anastasia Rakova, Moscow’s oncology service now operates 15 robotic surgical systems. Nearly 5,000 robot-assisted procedures are planned for 2026.

The work of one such robotic complex was described by Dmitry Utkin, head of the gynecologic oncology department at Oncology Center No. 1 of the Yudin City Clinical Hospital. The specially designed surgical system consists of two components—a console and a robotic unit. The surgeon operates from the console, while the robot is connected to the patient through a system of trocars and precisely transmits the surgeon’s movements.

Benefits for Doctors and Patients

Robotic surgery offers a range of advantages. Thanks to 3D visualization and up to tenfold magnification, surgeons gain a significantly improved view of the surgical field. The so-called robotic arms provide a high degree of freedom, allowing doctors to operate even in the most difficult-to-access areas.

Procedures performed using a robotic console are also beneficial for patients. They help reduce blood loss during surgery and lessen postoperative pain, which in turn accelerates recovery and shortens hospital stays.
