Rosatom Deploys Artificial Intelligence to Support Plant Personnel

A new AI system helps nuclear power plant operators analyze data and make informed decisions faster.

AI as an Assistant, Not a Replacement

Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, has begun implementing an AI‑based assistant designed to support personnel at nuclear power plants. The system functions as a decision‑support tool rather than a substitute for human operators. Its purpose is to help specialists process large volumes of data more quickly, improving both reliability and safety across reactor units.

According to Evgeny Abakumov, Rosatom’s Director for Information and Digital Technologies, the corporation has already launched the first experimental deployments of AI at its sites. The key role of the technology is to assist personnel who must monitor hundreds of parameters every day. The virtual assistant analyzes incoming information and provides recommendations, allowing operators to focus on critical tasks that require human expertise.

Safety First

Abakumov emphasized that any innovation in nuclear power must be introduced with an uncompromising priority on safety. Rosatom actively collaborates with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to help shape global standards for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in the nuclear sector.

This technological development carries significance not only for Russia but also for the global nuclear industry. The initiative demonstrates how digital transformation can strengthen human decision‑making rather than replace it. By delegating routine analytical tasks to AI, specialists can respond more effectively to complex operational challenges.
