Rosatom Develops an Algorithm to Detect and Correct Quantum Computer Errors

Russian researchers have introduced a breakthrough quantum algorithm designed to identify and correct system errors in quantum computing hardware — a step that could significantly improve reliability in next‑generation computation.

A Breakthrough Unveiled in High‑Tech Competition

A Rosatom team took first place in the Quantum Technologies category at the international high‑tech professional championship HighTech: Skills of the Future. The event, which this year featured competitions ranging from business‑process automation to UAV operation, was held in Yekaterinburg and included a quantum track for the first time.

Nadezhda Tatarinova, a researcher at Rosatom Quantum Technologies, and her team developed a quantum algorithm capable of detecting and correcting errors inside a quantum computing system. The approach strengthens the stability of quantum processors — a critical step toward scalable quantum architectures.

Quantum Tasks and Real‑World Problem‑Solving

During the competition, participants worked through advanced tasks in quantum cryptography and data transmission. Teams assembled and tested an optical communication line for quantum key distribution and launched a system for secure data exchange.

One challenge required recreating an emergency situation and troubleshooting a malfunction in a data‑transfer unit. On a simulator, the Rosatom team successfully programmed an error‑correction algorithm capable of identifying faults and restoring normal operation within a quantum computer.

Why Error Correction Matters

Quantum computers are extremely sensitive to external disturbances: thermal fluctuations, electromagnetic noise, and imperfections in qubit hardware can cause system instability. Error‑correction protocols like the one developed by the Rosatom team are essential to building practical quantum machines capable of running real workloads.

Technologies demonstrated at the championship signal Russia’s increasing presence in the global quantum‑tech ecosystem — from quantum communications to next‑generation computing models.
