Rosneft Launches AI-Powered Platform to Optimize Oil Field Development

A new Russian software suite uses neural networks to automate exploration, drilling decisions, and long-term extraction strategies across the energy sector.
Russian oil giant Rosneft has introduced “SmartGiR”, a digital platform designed to revolutionize how oil fields are explored and developed. Built by researchers at the company’s scientific institute in Ufa, the system integrates artificial intelligence to automate all major phases of oil production.
SmartGiR includes 12 interconnected modules that span the full lifecycle of resource development — from initial planning and geological data validation to selecting drilling locations and grouping wells into clusters. The system can generate long-term forecasts, adjust extraction plans in real time, and evaluate the accuracy of data from external sources. It also handles the creation of comprehensive project documentation.
This digital leap aligns with Rosneft’s 2030 strategic plan, which emphasizes technological leadership as a key driver of competitiveness in global energy markets.
