Russia Builds a ‘Smart Settlement’ for Oil Workers

Rosneft is carrying out a large-scale modernization of production and social infrastructure at the Priobskoye field in the Khanty-Mansi region. As part of its digital transformation strategy, its key subsidiary, RN‑Yuganskneftegaz, is implementing the Smart Settlement project aimed at ensuring safe and comfortable living conditions for more than 2,500 employees and contractors working on a rotational basis.

Virtual Reality and Telemedicine

The project integrates innovative solutions for living, working, and leisure. Infrastructure across eleven rotational settlements has been unified under a corporate standard that includes 48 modern dormitories and social facilities.

One of the project’s priorities is continuous professional development. To support this, remote sites use virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) training technologies, enabling employees to learn new skills directly at their workplaces.

Worker health is given particular attention. Telemedicine technologies now connect on-site medical stations with leading clinics across the country. To help maintain physical fitness, the settlements are equipped with modern multimedia gyms.

Smart Checkout Systems and Digital Libraries

Digital transformation has also reached daily living. Canteens serving more than 5,500 people each day now feature smart checkout systems that automatically recognize meals and enable contactless payment — speeding up service and improving hygiene.

For leisure, employees receive access to digital TV, e‑libraries, movies, and music via wireless internet. Recreation spaces include cinema rooms, game rooms, and billiard halls.

RN‑Yuganskneftegaz, responsible for about 30% of Rosneft’s total production, demonstrates how strong social responsibility can be integrated with advanced technologies. The project not only improves working conditions but also sets new standards for the entire oil and gas industry.
