Russia Has Created a Unique Engineering Center for Arctic Development

A new engineering complex in Russia aims to unite science and industry to develop advanced technologies and equipment tailored for the extreme conditions of the Arctic.

A Full‑Cycle Engineering Hub

At Sholom‑Aleichem Amur State University in the Jewish Autonomous Region, a state‑of‑the‑art engineering center has begun operations. It is designed to develop technologies and equipment for Arctic regions, enabling researchers to turn scientific discoveries into ready‑to‑use industrial prototypes.

The center’s structure includes production workshops, a design bureau, and its own testing site. This allows engineers to complete the full development cycle independently—from computer modeling and drafting to testing a finished metal prototype, TASS reports.

Supporting the center’s research is a unique university infrastructure, including one of only three ice‑testing pools in Russia. It is used to evaluate underwater vehicles in conditions that simulate the Arctic environment.

High‑Precision Machinery and Advanced 3D Printing

For calculations and simulation, the center relies on a powerful supercomputer and the Russian engineering software Logos. Its production base features workshops equipped with high‑precision laser‑cutting and metal‑processing machines, as well as a fleet of modern 3D printers for rapid prototyping.

One of the center’s key research areas is studying the strength of ice and composite materials. Using high‑speed cameras that record up to 7,000 frames per second, specialists analyze the process of crack formation. These data are crucial for improving structural designs and ensuring the reliable operation of equipment in the extreme conditions of the Far North.

A Boost for Arctic Exploration

The opening of this engineering center will help accelerate and improve the safety of Arctic resource development, providing Russia with cutting‑edge tools for work in one of the planet’s most challenging environments.
