Russia Is Building Its Own Smart TV Operating System

The country’s largest satellite broadcaster, Tricolor, is developing a homegrown OS that merges streaming and satellite TV into one smart ecosystem.

Russia’s tech sector is taking another step toward digital independence. The satellite TV giant Tricolor has announced plans to launch its own operating system for smart TVs in January 2026 — fully developed in-house and designed specifically for Russian users. It will become the third domestically made TV platform on the market, blending online and satellite television into a single interface powered by AI-driven recommendations.

Unlike imported systems, Tricolor’s OS promises full local support, regular updates, and built-in privacy protections. The platform includes universal search across major streaming services, app installation, voice control, and a child mode that filters inappropriate content.

One account for everything

The system is deeply integrated with Tricolor’s broader ecosystem — from smart home controls to video surveillance — all accessible under a single user ID, Tricolor ID. This unified setup allows seamless access to entertainment, home automation, and security tools from one dashboard.

Tricolor’s operating system is more than just a product release; it’s a strategic play in Russia’s ongoing effort to achieve technological sovereignty. By replacing foreign software with domestic innovation, the country is reshaping how millions of Russians watch, stream, and connect — one screen at a time.
