An intelligent onboard data recorder for vehicles is being developed by researchers. The project is being carried out at Ufa State Petroleum Technological University.

Specialists from the Department of Operation of Ground Transport in the Oil and Gas Industry and Construction are working on a hardware-and-software system that will make it possible to quickly analyze test results and adjust vehicle designs.

“Such a recorder makes it possible to promptly assess how individual components perform based on sensor signals and to take engineering decisions faster. This directly affects quality, reliability, and safety,” said Viktor Zhulkov, first deputy minister of transport and road facilities of the Republic of Bashkortostan.

Cheaper, More Efficient, and Easier to Use

The device can detect detonation processes in an engine and record operating parameters of the engine and other mechatronic systems over long periods. This capability makes it unique, said project leader and head of the ENT department at the university, Sergey Kinyov.

“Another advantage is its ability to integrate into a vehicle’s architecture and synchronously record data from the car’s digital network along with signals from test sensors,” the researcher added.

The development is expected to be cheaper than foreign alternatives and, where possible, will be produced using domestically made components. Researchers have already tested a prototype model, and software developers are now joining the project. The data analysis software, based on machine learning and artificial intelligence, will be able to process large volumes of information and significantly reduce processing time.

The onboard data recorder could be used by vehicle manufacturers and developers, research institutes, universities, and even racing drivers.
