Russia Is Developing Fully Automated Road Rollers

New construction machines will be able to work around the clock without human operators.

Russia is working on autonomous road rollers capable of paving roads without direct human control, according to the state corporation Rostec. The project is being led by the High-Precision Systems holding, which has long produced “Raskat” road rollers.

This year, engineers focused on creating a fully automated version powered by the domestic Prometey hardware and software platform — a system capable of automating nearly any type of vehicle. The autonomous rollers will help speed up construction projects while reducing labor costs.

The new machines will be equipped with multiple cameras, data-processing units, and communication systems, along with a remote-control console. Operators will be able to set real-time parameters or program the machines to work independently for extended periods.

Smart Signals for Smarter Roads

Rostec’s companies are also developing other innovations for intelligent transportation systems. For instance, its Shvabe holding produces smart traffic lights now installed in multiple Russian regions and abroad. These systems monitor real-time traffic flow and automatically adjust light cycles based on congestion levels.

Over the past three years, Shvabe has supplied more than 8,800 smart traffic lights to cities across Russia and several foreign countries — part of a broader push to bring automation and digital infrastructure to global road networks.
