Russia Launches Android-Free Smartphones That Still Run Android Apps

The new Russian-made devices, Mizar and Alcor, are built on domestic operating systems yet fully support Android apps—marking a milestone in tech sovereignty.

Russia has unveiled two new smartphones named Mizar and Alcor—after stars in the Big Dipper constellation—that operate entirely without Google’s Android OS. Despite this, the phones are fully compatible with Android apps. They run on Russian-made operating systems Red OS M and Aurora, and are being assembled at the Fplus factory in Russia.

While Mizar and Alcor differ in hardware specs, both feature up-to-date internals for 2025. The initial rollout is intended for state-owned enterprises and private companies, which are expected to use them for secure operations. Fplus plans to manufacture 40,000 to 50,000 units annually. Pricing will vary depending on the software configurations required by each customer.

Russia has already released a completely domestic smartphone model, the R570E, which runs Aurora OS and is available to the general public.

These developments underscore Russia’s growing ability to create high-end consumer electronics independent of foreign technology platforms.
