Russia Launches Pilot Program for Drone Delivery Couriers

Autonomous drones are now delivering packages in central Russia, slashing delivery times and relieving road congestion.

In the Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia, a pilot program has introduced autonomous delivery drones that can transport packages between distribution points in just 30 minutes. Recipients retrieve their deliveries from parcel lockers using an SMS code, according to TASS.

The Ministry of Economic Development reports that this new technology not only speeds up logistics but also eases pressure on road infrastructure, improving overall traffic safety. Following a successful first round of tests, officials are considering expanding the test zone.

Earlier in spring 2025, Russia trialed several drone models, including helicopter-style and agricultural drones. These technologies are now being adapted for commercial delivery, signaling a new phase in the evolution of the country’s transport system.

The Nizhny Novgorod trial shows how advanced drone systems can disrupt traditional logistics, making deliveries faster and more efficient. If scaled successfully, autonomous couriers could soon be deployed in other parts of the country.
