Russia Reveals How It’s Building the Nuclear Facilities of the Future
Rosatom is using digital twins and artificial intelligence to design the next generation of nuclear facilities — a strategy redefining how Russia builds and manages its most complex energy infrastructure.
Every new facility in Russia’s nuclear industry now begins with a digital twin — a precise virtual model of the structure to be built. According to Mikhail Lykhachev, Rosatom’s IT Director, who spoke at the National Industrial Congress, this approach allows for deep mathematical modeling at the design stage, laying the foundation for reliability and efficiency even before construction starts. The use of advanced digital technologies is strengthening Russia’s position in the global market and contributing to the development of the world’s nuclear energy sector.
Digital twins have become the central element of Rosatom’s digital transformation. They enable engineers to test different scenarios, optimize processes, and predict the behavior of complex systems in a safe virtual environment — a critical factor in an industry where precision and predictability are paramount.
At critical facilities, where deterministic accuracy is required, artificial intelligence acts as a powerful analytical tool — processing massive datasets, uncovering hidden patterns, and generating expert recommendations for specialists.
In parallel, Rosatom is developing robotics at three levels. At the local level, robots replace humans in hazardous zones. At the integrated level, they become part of production lines with automatic quality control. The most advanced direction involves so-called 'digital factories of the future,' where robots interact seamlessly with production management, logistics, and predictive analytics systems.
