Russia Rolls Out High-precision Treatment for Tumors

Oncology centers are deploying AI-powered stereotactic radiotherapy, a precise method that targets tumors directly while sparing healthy tissue, slashing treatment time from weeks to just a few sessions.

Russia’s leading cancer centers are adopting stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT), an advanced “sniper” approach to tumor irradiation that has been supercharged by artificial intelligence. Instead of requiring weeks of treatment, patients may need just a handful of sessions, with minimal damage to surrounding tissue and significantly faster recovery. Experts say the technology represents a revolution in cancer therapy that is reshaping global medical practice.

Traditional radiation therapy has been compared to “carpet bombing”: to ensure a tumor’s destruction, doctors irradiate both the malignancy and a large volume of nearby healthy tissue. The result is a heavy toll on the body and a course that can stretch to 30–35 sessions. SRT takes a radically different approach, RBC reports. Using ultra-precise equipment and complex computer modeling, beams of radiation lock onto the tumor itself, even compensating for micro-movements like those caused by breathing. For patients, that can mean as few as one to five treatments—and far fewer side effects.

Artificial intelligence now handles in minutes what once took specialists hours. It analyzes CT and MRI scans with extreme precision, mapping tumor contours and vital organs, then checks treatment plans against strict international standards, flagging potential errors instantly.

Integrating AI into oncology marks a major step for Russia and for medicine worldwide, bringing faster, safer, and more personalized cancer treatment within reach for millions of patients.
