Russia Sends Neural Network Into Space

GigaChat, Sber’s AI system, will help cosmonauts manage data and generate reports aboard the International Space Station.

The Russian neural network GigaChat, developed by Sberbank, is joining the crew of the International Space Station (ISS) to assist astronauts during missions, Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Kud-Sverchkov announced at a preflight press conference at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center.

According to Kud-Sverchkov, cosmonauts often have to create voice and text notes during space expeditions — and now some of that work will be handled by artificial intelligence.

“By the crew’s command, the AI can turn voice notes into reports, text files, or summaries,” he said. “The neural network will run locally, without connecting to Earth-based systems, and will be able to pull the necessary information from the cosmonauts’ notes simply on request.”

Cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov, a member of the backup crew, added that the system’s potential goes beyond report writing. “AI can be used for working with documentation, medical data, and even scientific experiments,” he said. “It will help optimize many of the crew’s daily tasks.”

The deployment of GigaChat marks a step toward more autonomous space operations — a sign that the next generation of astronauts may rely as much on artificial intelligence as on their own training and teamwork.
