Russia to Create Its Own AI‑Driven Version of Toy Story

Using advanced generative AI, Russian filmmakers have produced a short animated film in just two weeks, signaling a major shift in how the country approaches animation and media production

A New AI‑Powered Film Universe

Russian creators announced an AI‑generated analog to "Toy Story" during the panel “How AI Technologies Transform Film Production: From Script Development, Pre‑Production, and Casting to Post‑Production and Distribution” at the First Russia–Thailand Investment Forum. Producer Ekaterina Kononenko presented a preview of director Ivan Sosnin’s short film "Smartfonchik", which will serve as a prologue to a full‑length feature of the same name. Both films will be generated and produced using AI‑driven tools.

A Smartphone Instead of Woody

The story follows a small smartphone — young Kolya’s favorite gift — that becomes lost and finds itself in a world of forgotten devices. Joined by a grumpy power bank and a pair of headphone twins, the hero embarks on a journey home filled with unexpected adventures. Upon returning, the smartphone faces disappointment: its owner has already replaced it. Still, the character makes a mature and optimistic choice.

Thanks to AI technologies, the short film was completed in just two weeks. The full‑length feature is slated for release in 2026.

How AI Is Reshaping Russian Animation

Russian directors increasingly rely on generative AI to accelerate and reduce the cost of media production. Recently, the country’s first AI‑generated animated feature "Timen" demonstrated that neural‑network production can be several times cheaper than traditional 3D animation.

AI is becoming a tool not only for visual generation but for redesigning entire production pipelines — from concept art and layout to rendering and post‑production. This trend is positioning Russia as an emerging player in AI‑enhanced content creation.
