Russia Unveils AI-Powered Software for 3D Liver Surgery Simulation

Developed by a team of young scientists, the system creates a real-time 3D liver model to enhance diagnostics and reduce surgical risks.

A group of young Russian researchers from Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University has developed a new software platform that combines medical expertise, physics, and neural networks to simulate liver surgeries in 3D. The system uses AI to analyze CT scans, enabling the creation of a detailed three-dimensional liver model that can detect abnormalities and simulate surgical procedures on a virtual organ.

This innovation significantly improves diagnostic precision and helps minimize the risks associated with liver surgery—widely considered one of the most challenging areas in modern medicine. The researchers explain that a key difficulty lies in interpreting CT images accurately and planning interventions. With their new tool, surgeons can generate a 3D model in just 10 minutes, streamlining both analysis and planning.

Importantly, the platform is designed for widespread use, including in regional hospitals. It adapts easily to facilities regardless of their equipment level. Future updates are expected to expand its functionality even further.
