Russia Unveils AI System for Real-Time Environmental Monitoring

A new software-hardware platform powered by artificial intelligence will continuously track air and water quality, helping prevent ecological damage.

Russia is set to debut an AI-powered system for environmental monitoring of air and water. The country’s first domestic service of this kind will be introduced by the MTS digital ecosystem in the Volgograd region, according to local media outlet Gorodskiye Vesti.

The 'Proactive Environmental Risk Management System' has already been added to the national registry of domestic software. It’s the first Russian solution that combines AI analytics and machine learning to monitor environmental conditions and detect violations in real time.

The system leverages Big Data analytics and mathematical modeling and is compatible with nearly all Russian-made measurement devices. All equipment used is listed in the national measurement registry (FGIS ARSHIN) and undergoes regular calibration and maintenance.

Volgograd was selected as the pilot region due to its hot climate, industrial activity, and abundance of water bodies—factors requiring heightened ecological oversight. The system can track gas concentrations, temperature, pressure, and other parameters across various locations, and forecast potential environmental hazards.

MTS is also the first telecommunications provider to receive a license for soil and water monitoring. The new system is being prepared for entry into the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s official AI solutions registry.
