Russia Unveils First Yakut-Language Voice Assistant for Smart Homes

A new AI-powered virtual assistant will soon let users manage smart devices—and save on utility bills—using the Yakut language.

In 2025, Russia will debut its first voice assistant in the Yakut language. Named Edyiiy, the assistant can carry on conversations, execute commands, and control smart home systems. It aims to help users use energy more efficiently and cut utility costs.

The project is led by a lab focused on artificial intelligence and supported by local universities, research institutes, and the National Library of the Republic. Its goal is twofold: to bring the Yakut language into the digital space and preserve the region’s cultural heritage.

To train the AI, researchers used literary works, textbooks, and recorded dialogues. The team is also developing protocols to ensure fast and reliable communication between devices.

The assistant is expected to launch in popular smart gadgets in 2026. Experts say this breakthrough could pave the way for similar tools in other indigenous languages—with Russia’s technologies possibly used around the world.
