New base stations capable of supporting 5G networks will be deployed in Primorye and Yakutia by the end of the year. The equipment is manufactured by Yadro, part of the IX Holding Group. Alexey Shelobkov, CEO of IX Holding, announced the plans at the Eastern Economic Forum.

“Today, 4G remains the foundation of mobile networks, while opportunities to develop 5G are emerging, followed eventually by 6G. Mobile operators will have to upgrade their infrastructure in any case. Connectivity is a key area for maintaining technological sovereignty. In our case, both the software and hardware are developed entirely in Russia. This gives us confidence that we are not simply replacing foreign vendors’ equipment, but can help shape the development of the communications industry for years to come, relying on domestically developed technologies and equipment,” the executive said.

Yadro base stations are already operating in 37 Russian regions. They are used by MegaFon and Beeline. The equipment can be upgraded to 5G at the software level, without requiring a large-scale hardware replacement.
