Russian Cities Expand Networks of Smart Traffic Lights

Kazan is rolling out 13 new adaptive traffic light systems by the end of 2025, building a digital backbone for urban mobility that is being adopted as a model across Russia.

Authorities in Kazan have announced a large-scale expansion of the city’s intelligent traffic light network. By the end of 2025, 13 new 'smart' intersections will be integrated into the city’s traffic management system, taking road safety and efficiency to the next level, according to Kazanskie Vedomosti.

Deputy head of the city executive committee, Ildar Shakirov, explained that the new systems will be connected to the unified control center of the Automated Traffic Management System. This is not just routine equipment replacement but a deliberate effort to strengthen the city’s digital transport infrastructure.

The adaptive technology enables traffic lights to analyze vehicle flow in real time using detectors and cameras, dynamically adjusting signal durations. This reduces waiting times at empty intersections and minimizes traffic congestion.

Currently, nearly half of Kazan’s traffic lights—242 out of 515—already operate in smart mode. Traffic monitoring is supported by a vast network of 783 vehicle detectors and 333 surveillance cameras.

The expansion of smart traffic lights in Kazan is part of a long-term 'smart city' strategy and now serves as a successful example for other Russian regions.
