Russian Construction Management Platform Speeds Up Homebuilding

Remote oversight based on images made it possible to manage construction in real time.

Alexander Popov, chief technology officer of SIGNAL, a digital workspace for managing construction processes, described the challenges the platform has helped to address.

“There was a project with extremely tight finishing deadlines, and on one floor we discovered a serious lag in progress. The solution was unconventional: we switched to daily photo documentation of that floor from 20 fixed points. The client was effectively managing the process in real time using the images, reallocating crews to problem areas. That made it possible to increase the pace and get back on schedule,” Popov said.

Another successful case involved construction in an open field following a flood. Drone footage was used together with the INSPECTION model.

“The drone surveyed the site almost every day, documenting the condition of all houses from 50 points. That level of transparency was critically important not only for builders, but also for government oversight. The project was completed in record time,” Popov added.

Success Measured by the Absence of Questions

The SIGNAL platform is a unified digital environment for managing construction processes. It eliminates document chaos, makes workflows transparent, and shifts control toward prevention. The platform consists of four key modules. DOCS serves as a common data environment and document management system. TOOLS provides a visual 3D model of the construction site. The INSPECTION module enables remote site oversight using 360-degree photos, while DASHBOARD functions as the client’s personal workspace, bringing all key aspects of construction together on a single screen.

According to SIGNAL CTO Alexander Popov, the key indicator of a project’s success is the absence of support requests, when the system is so intuitive and stable that users simply have no questions.

“An ideal project is one where all four modules work in sync. DOCS provides seamless document management, TOOLS offers an up-to-date BIM model as the single source of truth for volumes, INSPECTION delivers weekly photo documentation for remote oversight, and DASHBOARD ensures managers always have an up-to-date analytical picture at hand. In this mode, project management shifts from constant ‘firefighting’ to proactive, strategic control,” Popov concluded.
