Russian Developer to Protect a Space Satellite From Malware
Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has built a specialized antivirus solution for the RUVDS satellite platform, extending digital protection beyond Earth’s orbit.
Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky has unveiled a new product designed to protect a space satellite. The solution was developed at the request of RUVDS, a hosting provider that launches small spacecraft into orbit for research and educational purposes.
The satellite, RUVDSSat1, is scheduled to enter orbit in the near future and will allow software developers to test their applications directly in space.
According to experts, space-based IT services of this kind are still largely experimental and focused on validating functionality. RUVDSSat1 is a compact satellite measuring just 5 by 5 centimeters. A microcomputer onboard is responsible for handling its IT workloads.
Kaspersky adapted its KESL solution for the satellite. KESL is a comprehensive cybersecurity system for corporate networks, designed to provide centralized protection anywhere in the world—now including outer space. The software was optimized to meet performance constraints in orbit. The satellite is expected to operate in space for at least one year.
Superterrestial Protection
Kaspersky added that the solution takes into account the specific requirements of software used in autonomous vehicles. Experience gained from the project is expected to improve protection for devices with limited computing power.
