Russian Developers Shift En Masse to Service-Oriented Architecture
Companies are moving away from the “single large application” model in favor of multiple independent services tailored to specific tasks.
In 2025, the ARGUS Research and Engineering Center accelerated its transition from monolithic architecture to a service-oriented architecture (SOA) combined with elements of an event-driven approach (EDA). The company’s press service told IT Russia about the shift. ARGUS develops IT solutions for automating operational activities and supporting business processes.
The transition affected the company’s long-established products, including ARGUS NRI and ARGUS WFM. One of the key changes was the standardization of integrations through the use of Apache NiFi. This made it possible to abandon custom-built integrations, reducing deployment timelines and simplifying maintenance.
The architectural overhaul was accompanied by a move to an import-independent technology stack. ARGUS products now rely on PostgreSQL, Arenadata, and other domestic and open-source solutions.
Efficiency, Security, and Multitasking
As the company explained, for many long-established developers that have been evolving their solutions for more than 20 years, such changes represent a radical shift in mindset. It requires abandoning the logic of a single large application in favor of a set of independent services, each responsible for a specific function. This approach offers several advantages, including cost savings through service reuse, stronger security thanks to component isolation, and the ability to develop in parallel.
